The 31st edition of the Carrefour mondial de l’accordéon
From August 29 to September 2, Montmagny will welcome the 31st edition of the Carrefour mondial de l’accordéon. The renowned accordion festival will be full of moving moments and new discoveries, bringing musicians from around the world to Quebec’s Chaudière-Appalaches region.
With 47 different musical experiences, featuring more than 85 artists from 11 countries, the festival is proud to uphold a commitment to showcasing different types of accordions, as well as a wide variety of styles and techniques. Bulgarian, Balkan and Scandinavian sounds, along with Russian, Italian, Scottish and Belgian traditions, and Catalan, Breton, Acadian and Quebecois rhythms will all come together to delight audiences.
The programme is also packed with uncategorizable surprises, including a Swedish-Norwegian duo on chromatic bass accordion and diatonic accordion. Attendees will also be pleased to see Carrefour regulars, like Italy’s Roberto Lucanero, Paris-Moscow duo Domi Emorine and Roman Jbanov, as well as a series of distinguished Quebec talents. From very young to seasoned musicians, all generations of accordionists will be represented and celebrated.
To round off the festivities, the Carrefour is offering two Master Classes. The first is with Roman Jbanov on the chromatic accordion, and then Sabin Jacques will give the second Master Class on the diatonic accordion. Furthermore, as part of two lecture-performances, Philippe Krümm, France’s eminent accordion expert, will pay tribute to French accordionist Émile Vacher, considered the creator of the musette style. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Vacher’s death, three artists will join Krümm to bring famous arias from Vacher’s repertoire to life.
With 17 sit-down concerts, as well as the annual Veillée de danse and the Soirée de musique Trad du Québec, the Carrefour also has programming specifically for young audiences. A special morning performance followed by crafts has been planned for children 2 years of age and older. The Caisse Desjardins of the Montmagny RCM (regional county municipality) has been an enthusiastic festival partner from the start. “The Caisse of the RCM is proud to be associated with the 31st edition of the Carrefour mondial de l’accordéon in Montmagny, and to contribute to making culture and entertainment accessible to the entire population,” says its President, Michel Fortin. “Let’s all come together to enjoy and to make the 2019 edition of this event a total success.”
